Temporary cover: local opportunities across different markets
The EU offers multiple national markets for temporary cover, rather than one uniform market. France illustrates the scale of the clinical workforce: at the end of 2025, more than 18,000 veterinarians worked primarily with companion animals and around 1,300 primarily with horses. Both groups expanded at mid-single-digit rates during that year.
French services that list temporary veterinary cover show that replacement work is already an organised activity. However, growing veterinary headcount does not establish that replacement bookings are increasing.
The relevant unit of observation is a temporary-cover opportunity stated for particular dates and responsibilities. Veterinary, nursing and technical opportunities are considered separately by country. The evidence confirms recurring temporary-cover activity, but does not establish a reliable EU-wide growth or decline in bookings.

This month at a glance
Early observations across monitored EU sources show publicly advertised opportunities for locum veterinarians and veterinary nurses or technicians. Some ads include multiple explicit cover dates rather than a single opportunity, so listings and individual shift dates are reported separately. Coverage varies by country and source, and some platforms do not expose a public national live count.

About the data
This page draws on publicly accessible veterinary locum and relief sources. Figures represent opportunities observed across monitored public sources, not the total EU market. Duplicate listings are removed where identifiable, and job advertisements are kept separate from explicit individual shift dates whenever possible.
