Relief work: a substantial part of clinical staffing

Relief work is already an established part of clinical practice. In the AVMA’s 2024 census, close to one in ten private-practice veterinary respondents worked in relief or contract roles. The wider outlook is positive: official projections anticipate nearly 10% employment growth for both veterinarians and veterinary technicians over 2025–2035.

Small-animal practice provides the largest clinical employment base. Equine cover presents a different challenge: approximately half of AAEP members operate one- or two-veterinarian practices, and the association identifies emergency coverage as a workforce-retention priority. In such small teams, one absence can substantially affect the rota.

Our assessment is that relief meets an established operational need, from individual shifts to longer periods of cover. However, a sizeable relief workforce and positive employment forecasts do not, by themselves, demonstrate rising bookings in every location.

Explicit dates identified

This month at a glance

Early observations across monitored US sources show active demand for relief veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Some postings represent multiple explicit dates of cover rather than a single opportunity, which is why eufenia tracks listings and individual shift dates separately. Coverage varies by state and source, and some platforms do not expose a public national live count.

About the data

This page draws on publicly accessible veterinary relief and temporary-cover sources. Figures represent opportunities observed across monitored public sources, not the total US market. Duplicate listings are removed where identifiable, and job advertisements are kept separate from explicit individual shift dates whenever possible.
